Manscaping: Build Your Skin Care Regimen

Women have long understood and appreciated the significance of healthy looking skin, both for its superficial results and its not so obvious internal effects (i.e. confidence).  Guys, however, just don't seem to understand the concept and rationale of a good skin care regimen.  Considering your skin is the largest organ in the human body (as opposed to something else), you would think that guys would care?  But, for the most part, they don't.  And the skin remains neglected.  Needless to say, it was no surprise when I had to introduce a former boyfriend of mine to the wonderful world of the not-so-superficial epidermis.

Become a DIY-er!

I'm sure we've all had this happen to us at one point in time or another -- we find a great item at a great price only to realize that everyone else has found the exact same item for the exact same deal!  2 years ago, I bought a jean vest that was on sale and my friend along with another girl I went to school with just happened to have bought the same vest.  As you can see, this was a popular sale.  And who could blame them, it was a great vest and a great deal, they'd be foolish to pass it by!

With a penchant to differentiate myself, I was inspired by the DIY blog Park and Cube and the DIY jean shorts that were posted there. The shorts were a DIY version of distressed shorts, which had chain links added to it (refer to the picture on the right).  What came next is pretty obvious, instead of distressing and manipulating a pair of shorts in said manner, I decided to distress and add chains to my denim vest -- you don't need to reinvent the wheel, just find new applications for existing developments.

Time To Let It Go

Shiny Black Leggings Circa 2008We’ve all been party to that one woman who seems to be stuck in whatever trend of whatever decade she had looked hot in.  She usually has some type of retro hairdo (e.g. permed, frosted hair) with unsavory makeup (think: frosted).  She often sports a crop top (not the Alexander Wang kind), too short acid-washed jeans, and a rugged jean jacket.  This is what happens when you don’t let go of trends.  Even if trends are cyclical, you must still learn to let them go until they're ready to return.

Now, let me be clear, there’s a stark difference between holding onto a trend versuses holding onto a classic piece.  Trends are defined by their novelty; once the novelty ends, so too does the fad.  Whereas, classic pieces are classic because they are versatile, chic, and forever in style.  For example, back in 2008, I bought a pair of shiny, black American Apparel leggings (refer to the picture on the right) and they became all the rage.  In 2010, it’s now hanging in my closet only to be worn on laundry days.  I got to a point where I had to retire it, because the shine became dated and lame.  In its place, I now wear simple black leggings with no flashy details.  To be clear, the aforementioned leggings weren't trendy because they were leggings, but rather because they were shiny.  For the record, I consider leggings to be a classic piece.

Hairstyles for Men

A man could have great style, but if his hair is lackluster, it will throw me, and every other woman, off.  Plenty of attractive men I know don’t give their hair the attention it deserves, and I say shame on them. Why?  Because, as the saying goes, "hair frames your face."  Hair not only provides the context for your face, but it also acts as an advertisement for you (i.e. all of you, personality included) -- it can make you look slimmer, fatter, older, younger, smarter, more sophisticated, fun, serious, etc.  Think of your head as a sign: your face is the important part with the words and your hair is either the blinking lights that draws attention or the subtle border that focuses the eye. I was raised in a household where hair is of utmost importance, and if you’re having a bad hair day, you mustn’t leave the house until it’s fixed -- that or you put on a hat. I will share with you a few hairstyles that I love to see on men.

Runway vs. Real Way

With the Haute Couture shows being presented last week, I wanted to examine the idea of runway versus the ‘real way’. Immediately, I think of those Reitman’s commercials where they show a model wearing haute couture (usually a knock off) and then a soccer mom wearing Reitman’s. To be very honest, both make me cringe, but that’s another story. I do wonder, however, what’s ‘acceptable’ off the runway and how can we take things that inspire us and make them ‘real world’ friendly?

The Hat (Chapeau)

I’m absolutely fascinated by hats.  The right hat can definitely take an outfit from blah to fab in an instant.  Whether you’re having a bad hair day or just feel like rocking a hat, here are some great styles to try.

Hot Hair Trends for the Summer

With the heat and humidity outside, it may be hard to look cute.  You feel like your makeup is sliding off of your face, your tank top is sticking to your sweaty body, and your hair has become a complete "hot" mess.  You’ve spent all morning slaying your hair into submission and by the end of the end, it’s turned into an even bigger mess!  Here are a few simple summer hair trends that will help you look hot in the heat.

Style: What's Your Inspiration?

I love it when someone is confident and comfortable with what they wear!  So much so that they don't blindly follow trends -- that is to say, they're cognizant of the trends, but don't bend to their every whim.  When I encounter someone in one of these rare moments, my question to them is usually, ‘What inspires your sense of style?’  This question is as hard to answer as the infamous ‘Describe your sense of style’, as it is equivalent to asking someone to define themselves -- so hearing the response is usually a treat.  Here's my story...

Makeup Tips to Look Your Best

I'm sure we've all been in this scenario before: walking down the street you see a woman wearing a great outfit, a hot pair of shoes, and then you get to the face and the makeup is terrible -- no ifs, ands, or buts.  Don’t let that woman be you!  I started wearing makeup when I was 13 and during that year, I made quite a few makeup mishaps.  I became a makeup junkie by the age of 15 and quickly learned how to properly do my makeup so as to avoid looking like a hot mess.  Note: I’m not a professional; I'm just a girl that happens to enjoy applying makeup!  So if I can do it, so can you.  Through trial and error, I’ve learned a few things along the way.  Here are some of the tips I've learned, which will hopefully help you to look your best.

Summer Scents: Women's Edition

In my previous article, I wrote about summer colognes for men who want a fresh new scent.  Now, I have an article for the ladies.  I know I said in the previous article that I really get a kick out of testing men's colognes, but I will be honest, I had way more fun trying to find my favourite summer fragrances for the ladies!  Nevertheless, similar to colognes, the same general rule applies: summer fragrances tend to smell a lot lighter and cleaner (instead of musky) than their fall and winter counterparts.  As I was testing the scents, I was so tempted to buy my favourites, but alas, I read Kari's post and realized that my bank account wouldn't allow it...so instead, I'm here to share my wisdom:
